Beautiful Loser Songs Ranked

Beautiful Loser is the eighth studio album by American rock artist Bob Seger, released in 1975 (see 1975 in music). This album marked Seger’s return to Capitol Records after a four-year split. His previous record with Capitol was Brand New Morning in 1971. The album relied mostly on session musicians from the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, but the Silver Bullet Band members were used separately on some songs and together on “Nutbush City Limits,” a cover song of the hit by Ike & Tina Turner. Here are all of Beautiful Loser songs ranked.

9. Fine Memory

“Fine Memory” opens with lyrics and atmosphere pretty similar to “Night Moves” but perhaps more on the sadder side. A song that captures the innocence of being close to someone you love and just enjoying being yourself while absorbing all the romance you can with the love of your life, which is basically what makes the 70’s music scene so good because the decade was *loaded* with songs like these.”

8. Travelin’ Man

“Travelin’ Man” opens with a tremendous line. This is a bigger improvement. The first line is *awesome*. “Up with the sun gone with the wind, she always said I was lazy, leavin’ my home leavin’ my friends, runnin’ when things get too crazy, out on the road out beneath the stars, feelin’ the breeze passin’ the cars, women have come women have gone, everyone tryin’ to cage me, some were so sweet I barely got free, others they only enrage me, sometimes at night I see their faces, I feel the traces they left on my soul, those are the memories that made me a wealthy soul”.

7. Sailing Nights

“Sailing Nights” is SO mysterious with the very first line- “Like the wind that carried ahead to a far more distant shore, to a shipwreck that was certain long before, I can see there’s no use sailing among ships I’ve known before, it will only bring me more and more and more lonely sailing nights, more racing, dimming lights, lonely nights and all too familiar sights, just as water seeks its level, so I only seek to live, hoping somehow I can find a way to give, and the sea it softly beckons “Come and go where you’ve not been”

6. Black Night

“Black Night” is one of those bluesy Seger songs that doesn’t really appeal to me. Similar to “The Fire Down Below”, this is an acquired taste whether you like Bob singing these type of songs or not. I have mixed feelings with them. “He’ll seem to come on with a vengeance, you’ll think that you’ve been wasting time, you’ll think that you’ve been discussing history, and he’ll have left you far behind, ah but you must realize he needs you to keep himself from going blind, and when the black night falls upon you, you’ll find it easy to be kind, kind, the stars may shimmer in the black sky, the wind may rustle in the trees, you may be worried he may psych you, you might be praying on your knees, ah but when you realize he needs you and when you finally take some time the cool black night will fall upon you and you’ll find it easy to unwind” is a REALLY creative line. I also like the way Bob sings certain lines like “You’ll find it easy to be kind, you’ll find it easy to unwind, you’ll find it easy to be blind” and the piano is pretty good too.”

5. Nutbush City Limits

“Nutbush City Limits” rocks! A song that shows some of those treasurable heavy metal tendencies that occurred on those early Bob Seger System albums. “Nutbush city! Nutbush city limits!” is a unique chorus. The “Better watch out for the police, keep an eye out for the police!” part at the end gives the song a vibrant live feel. Granted this song probably isn’t everyone’s specialty but I enjoy it.”

4. Katmandu

“Now I used to believe “Katmandu” was the worst song ever recorded. That of course is an exaggeration, though to be honest I still don’t care for it much. Bob’s vocals just totally stink the way he sings it in my opinion, so its hit status is a HUGE curiosity to me. At least FM radio doesn’t play this song anymore unless someone calls in and requests it, but yeah, I hate it. “

3. Momma

“Momma” opens with more memorable lyrics. Let me share them with you! “I was the baby brother, I was the quiet other and I remember mother so well, I was the little stranger I never was in danger, I coulda had a manger pray tell, oh how she could control me, when I was bad she’d scold me, sometimes she wouldn’t hold me and I’d cry, but momma she never told me a lie, momma she never told me a lie”. Really tender the way it’s sung.”

2. Jody Girl

“Jody Girl” is a forgettable ballad. The problem here is that Bob’s not very soulful on this song, or the whole album for that matter. The old Bob Seger from the Bob Seger System days would totally floor me with an incredibly soulful performance, but here? While approaching his commercial years? He sounds uninteresting to me so I think the song’s fairly dull. If Van Morrison ever covered this song it would sound incredible.”
