Blind Melon Albums Ranked

Blind Melon is an American rock band formed in 1990 in Los Angeles by five musicians: three from Mississippi, one from Pennsylvania and one from Indiana. The band currently consists of guitarists Rogers Stevens and Christopher Thorn, drummer Glen Graham, vocalist Travis Warren and bassist Nathan Towne. They are best known for their 1993 hit “No Rain”, and enjoyed critical and commercial success in the early 1990s with their neo-psychedelic take on alternative rock. Blind Melon released two albums on Capitol Records – Blind Melon (1992) and Soup (1995) – before their original lead vocalist Shannon Hoon died of a drug overdose on the band’s tour bus in New Orleans on October 21, 1995. After four years of unsuccessfully searching for a replacement for Hoon, Blind Melon officially dissolved in 1999. The remaining members reformed the band in 2006 with Warren and recorded one album with him, For My Friends (2008). Shortly after its release, Warren left Blind Melon but rejoined in 2010, when the band returned to performing occasional gigs. Blind Melon is currently working on their fourth studio album. The group have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. Here are all of Blind Melon albums ranked.

7. Live At The Palace

“I’m not sure why the back tracks don’t match what the CD plays … but ah well. Like other reviewers … I miss this band. I miss Hoon. As cliché as it sounds, he was truly one in a million … his vocals were distinctive and likeable. Their songs are treasured by the fans and this is just a taste of what they were capable of. They seemed to have a lot of fun.”

6. Tones Of Home: The Best Of Blind Melon

“A collection that compiles Blind Melon’s short run in the music industry. This features the hits “No Rain” and “Toes Across the Floor” as well as many others. This also features some previously unreleased material – two live versions (“Soak the Sin” and the amazing “Deserted”). Also contains the non album song “Three is a Magic Number” (which is such a fun song).”

5. For My Friends

“Band sounds solid and their choice for lead singer was a good one. He possesses the same type of voice as Shannon Hoon, which is a voice that fits perfectly with the music, without picking a guy who sounded like he was trying to be Shannon Hoon. It doesn’t sound like a Hoon ripoff in an attempt to recapture what they had, but rather finding the right shaped puzzle piece to complete a band as it forges a new future.”

4. Classic Masters

“This group showed a tremendous amount of talent before the untimely death of their front man, Shannon Hoon. “No Rain” is the only radio staple, but the other tracks are wonderful as well.”

3. Nico

“Poor Shannon he left to early. I would love for Blind Melon to be around to this day, it would be amazing to think what they could do. This is the last of a great line of albums. I have to say that I really like “Soup” and “All That I Need.” Also I would just like to point out the genius of Shannon Hoon because he left a song (“Letters From A Porcupine”) on a guys answering machine.”

2. Soup

“Another uncommercial album from the 90s that is incredibly varied. Blind Melon had landed a hit with “No Rain” from their debut album. But the second album “Soup” had no radio hit and flopped from a commercial point of view. But musically the album is top notch. The musicians are first rate and the band is very tight.”

1. Blind Melon

“A masterpiece of alt rock. This is the first time I’ve heard this for about 20 years and I’m astonished by how it’s held its own. The songwriting is so varied, the vocals so heartfelt, the guitars so inventive, and drumming so sharp. Instrumentally there is so much to discover here, I should also note the guitar tone is beautiful on this album – bluesy yet rocky, expressive yet clipped.”
