Cake Songs Ranked

Cake (stylized CAKE) is an American alternative rock band from Sacramento, California, consisting of singer John McCrea, trumpeter Vince DiFiore, guitarist Xan McCurdy, bassist Daniel McCallum, and drummer Todd Roper. The band has been noted for McCrea’s sarcastic lyrics and monotone vocals, and their wide-ranging musical influences, including country music, Mariachi, rock, funk, Iranian folk music, and hip hop. Prolonging the Magic, the band’s third album was released in 1998 and went platinum, having shipped over one million units; this was followed three years later by Comfort Eagle, the band’s first album on Columbia Records, featuring the single “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” which hit number 7 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. Following a series of tours, including several versions of the Unlimited Sunshine Tour, the band released Pressure Chief in 2004, its second and last album on Columbia. After creating its own label, Upbeat Records, the band released Showroom of Compassion in 2011, which became its first album to debut at the top of the Billboard charts, selling 44,000 copies in the first week after release. Here are all of the Cake songs ranked.

20. Opera Singer (Comfort Eagle, 2001)

“This is my favorite Cake song! They have wonderful tracks full of energy and amazing music, but this one just does it for me. It’s awesome, I used to listen to it as a kid and jump on my bed!”

19. Arco Arena (Comfort Eagle, 2001)

“Great short instrumentals in this song. This one is very catchy and you’ll find yourself singing like a poor pauper before you realize it.”

18. Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps (Fashion Nugget, 1996)

“Probably the grooviest cake song and one of the most grooviest songs ever. Funky bass and guitar, gives the song a real catch!”

17. Waiting (Pressure Chief, 2004)

“Really a cool song. Good solo, a bit strange lyrics, awesome chorus. Somehow I find it a bit uplifting. Cake has a way with words that I rarely find in other artists.”

16. Mexico (Prolonging the Magic, 1998)

“”Mexico” is one of my absolute favorite songs.  Honestly most of the songs here are are affected in just the right way to make me want to drink a bottle of wine and feel sorry for myself but in a good way, but no joke, I think “Mexico” is one of the greatest alt-rock songs of the ’90s.”

15. Jolene (Motorcade of Generosity, 1994)

“It’s just the perfect Cake song, it has all of the elements that make their music great…great riff, great story, true emotion…This song is rich with emotion and exciting guitar riffs. It’s perfect. The best Cake song out there.”

14. Sheep Go to Heaven (Prolonging the Magic, 1998)

“Every odd-numbered song destroys thee following even-numbered jam. One of thee best sequenced rekerds of perfectly spacing out hits ‘n’ misses. “Sheep Go to Heaven” is alt-rock religious philosophy 101.”

13. Long Time (Showroom of Compassion, 2011)

“The band goes through the motions, and a potentially great song seems content to roll along until it reaches the end. Thankfully, the band shifts into that warm, familiar rhythm that the band’s made their own with “Long Time” and they don’t really look back.”

12. Satan Is My Motor (Prolonging the Magic, 1998)

“Very samey, but it’s likeable samey.  I guess the biggest problem – outside of the vocal delivery, which is sometimes irritating and only occasionally appropriate – is the lyrics, most of which aren’t very good and some of which are incomprehensible.”

11. Shadow Stabbing (Comfort Eagle, 2001)

“”Shadow Stabbing” is one of my favorite songs off the album. The lyrics are again not obvious, but a closer inspection sees that it is about a man, a writer, perhaps in a mental institution. The lyrics and imagery are some of the best they’ve ever pulled off. Also, we get to see McCrea put a little more power in his voice.”

10. I Bombed Korea (Motorcade of Generosity, 1994)

“A superb song with thoughtful lyrics. A very enjoyable record, I like that fusion of styles. Never gets boring. It rocks! The lyrics are a plus as well.”

9. Friend is a Four Letter Word (Fashion Nugget, 1996)

“Some beautifully constructed and matched words and music (harmonies) in this fantastic ballad… One of favourite songs of all time!”

8. Italian Leather Sofa (Fashion Nugget, 1996)

“While the trumpet is simply astonishing, the ambiance that is delayed in the different parts of this song just amazes me. Absolutely amazing trumpet performance in this nugget.”

7. Rock ‘n’ Roll Lifestyle (Motorcade of Generosity, 1994)

“The chunky style riffing of “Rock ‘n’ Roll Lifestyle” influenced my guitar playing to no end. Getting ready for soccer practice in middle school, this was thee jam. When revisited, it was much better than just catchiness, jokes, socially comments, & indie destruction”

6. Never There (Prolonging the Magic, 1998)

“I really have grown quite fond of there skaity goodness. One of those many guilty pleasure groups I have from the 90’s with the likes of Sugar Ray, Blink 182, Sister Hazel, and Hootie and the Blowfish.”

5. I Will Survive (Fashion Nugget, 1996)

“A phenomenally underrated cover of a classic song. Cake took Gloria Gaynor’s outrageous disco smash and…got it to sound exactly like every other song they ever did. Not sure if that’s something to applaud or wince at. It is, however, official, they can make anything sound like a doughy Cake song, they could take a Klaus Nomi tune or Judy Dunaway’s Balloon Music and get it to sound exactly like any of their other songs.”

4. Frank Sinatra (Fashion Nugget, 1996)

“This is a good song, they were a good ska band that had some talent, and made catchy tracks. I really liked this one.”

3. The Distance (Fashion Nugget, 1996)

“Loved it as a kid, and (unlike most things I listened to as a kid) it still holds up today. Cake were always a singles band, but at least their singles were usually quite good.”

2. Short Skirt / Long Jacket (Comfort Eagle, 2001)

“I know that part of Cake’s charm is the dorky-cool attitude of the singer, but his monotone delivery is far less interesting when he sings about tiny random things and tries to tie it all into a love song with not much energy to compensate.”

1. Comfort Eagle (Comfort Eagle, 2001)

“This is my favourite cake song, rock n’ roll lifestyle and shirt skirt long jacket are also songs this is an awesome band, more people should get into them!”
