California Songs Ranked

California is the seventh studio album by American rock band Blink-182, released on July 1, 2016 through BMG as the band’s only album on the label. Produced by John Feldmann, it is the first album by the band to feature Alkaline Trio frontman Matt Skiba, who replaced former member Tom DeLonge. After touring and releasing the band’s sixth album Neighborhoods (2011), it became difficult for the trio to record new material, due to DeLonge’s other projects. After disagreements, the remaining members of the group—vocalist/bassist Mark Hoppus and drummer Travis Barker—sought separation from DeLonge and recruited Skiba in his place. The album debuted at number one in the US and several other countries, and was the group’s first domestic chart-topper in 15 years, and first ever in the UK. It received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album; the band’s first. Its first two singles, “Bored to Death” and “She’s Out of Her Mind”, charted well on Billboard‘s Alternative Songs chart. Here are all of California songs ranked.

10. Kings of the Weekend

“From the first riff of this track, it’s awesome. The lyrics are all about having a great weekend that’s so awesome it might kill you, where you are in charge of your own destiny for 48 hours unlike the rest of the week when responsibility is in charge. This is a great song to start your weekend with! (It’s Friday when I’m listening to it for the first time. It’s putting me in the right mood)”

9. Built This Pool

“The whole track is 16 seconds long. It will…..catch you off guard. Then you will laugh. This album is catchy and fun. It’s that simple. yes, it’s not old Blink, but guess what? neither are the guys. They’ve grown and changed and that’s what happens to music, it grows and it changes.”

8. Rabbit Hole

“The song opens with “Dear Head, shut up.” It hooked me right from there because I can’t recall how many times I’ve been in that mood, where I don’t want to do the smart responsible thing. Sometimes I just want to react emotionally and not worry about the consequences!! This song is about that. And the music sounds great. This ended up being one of my favorites on the album. I love this track!”

7. Home is Such a Lonely Place

“This is a much more mellow sound than the rest of the album. It’s a beautiful song. The vocals are fantastic. The lyrics discuss a really dark situation with a relationship that isn’t what it once was. It’s sad, but beautifully done.”

6. No Future

” Liked the music. The lyrics didn’t do anything for me. Neither did the overall sound of the vocals. Overall this was one of the few ‘misses’ on this album for me. But music is a funny thing…you might think it’s the best song ever and wouldn’t be wrong.”

5. Los Angeles

“This one didn’t resonate with me. Maybe that’s because I’ve spent a grand total of 24 hours in LA in my life. Maybe I just don’t have the background to get it. The music wasn’t particularly my favorite either. It’s not a bad song. It’s just not working for me.”

4. Cynical

“The beat really gets you going. The lyrics are pretty awesome as well. It’s got a theme of “what’s the point”, hence the title ‘Cynical’. It’s a good song. When the song hits 1:05 and continues, it shows why this is the best song on this album, with a few others coming close.”

3. San Diego

“I’ve spent a lot more time in San Diego, but that wasn’t what made me like this one. This song isn’t really about the city, so much as the memories the singer has there with someone he once loved. San Diego is a euphemism for a happier time with an old love that he can’t go back to. I’ve spent a lot of time in that San Diego too. This one resonated with me. It sounds awesome. Its’ a great song.”

2. She’s Out of Her Mind

“The vocals are more prominent on this track, which works well because Matt Skiba is awesome. The song is one that anyone who’s ever dated anyone is going to relate to pretty well. The whole song is awesome and is one of my favorites on the album.”

1. Bored to Death

“The lyrics here are really good. It’s all about that feeling where nothing gets you excited, no matter how interesting it actually is. The chorus includes “Life is too short to last long”. That sounds kind of dangerous…but then isn’t life more fun that way? It’s a really cool song. And the music rocks.”
