Nine Songs Ranked

Nine is the eighth studio album by American rock band Blink-182, released on September 20, 2019, through Columbia Records. The band—composed of bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus, guitarist/vocalist Matt Skiba, and drummer Travis Barker—began developing the album after fulfilling touring obligations for their previous release, California (2016). While Nine builds upon their collaboration with producer John Feldmann, who also produced California, it also utilizes additional outside producers and songwriters including Captain Cuts, the Futuristics, and Tim Pagnotta. Nine received positive reviews from music critics, many of whom complimented its upgrade to the band’s signature sound as well as its moodier lyrical content. Here are all of Nine songs ranked.

10. Happy Days

“As the title would kind of imply “Happy Days” really is just a joyous, uplifting pop punk song. When you use the word “happy” and say it the right way in a song I think its almost a way to make the listener feel good and happy”

9. Black Rain

“The track “Black Rain” is so much a song I want to love, the aggressive drums and guitar are very uncharacteristic in sound for blink, but it sounds so good. The emotion is so clearly there, but the vocals in the first third of the track I find to be a major of detraction, but for the time being I’ll keep this on my daily listen playlist.”

8. Darkside

“This album although taking a few more risks in terms of modern production is actually an improvement over the very good California. Songs with Matt Skiba taking to vocals are actually some of my favorites, they don’t sound quite like Blink of old, but really when the music is this good it really doesn’t matter.”

7. I Really Wish I Hated You

“Everyone keeps bad mouthing the new Blink, but I honestly feel this is the best Blink album so far. For me there is everything Blink-182 did before this album, and now everything after. The people in love with Tom DeLonge need to move on. He’s classic Blink, this is new Blink.”

6. Pin the Grenade

“This is a really good album and you will enjoy it if you are a fan of Blink. If you liked the last album, California, then you will like this one but just not as much. California was fantastic with a bunch of songs that got stuck in my head and a few little joke tracks.”

5. No Heart to Speak Of

“It’s got that blink vibe, but with a darker tone and way more electronic instrumentation. It doesn’t grab you right away but after a couple listens, it becomes a much better record than California. I really like how they let Matt skiba off his creative leash on this record, and he really takes charge”

4. On Some Emo S**t

“Most of these songs are about heartache and pain. I like it for it’s unique place in time. Most everyone has felt heartache at one time or another. Most of these songs are a bummer, but I’ve felt like this before.”

3. The First Time

“The opener The First Time even sounds like that albums opener Feeling This. If there was one thing I had to complain about like a little baby, it would be i wish I got to hear Mark or Matt sing on some emo shit on the chorus of On Some Emo Shit.”

2. Heaven

“It’s certainly not a bad album and I’d have a very hard time trying to convince you that it was. What it is is a decent one, with several melodic pop rockers and a few pop punkers. It’s very unremarkable but it’s certainly listenable.”

1. Remember to Forget Me

“Of course, I’m not going to pretend like this thing is perfect. There are some seriously horrible songs peppered throughout this thing, and for that reason I can totally understand where some of the hate is coming from.”
