From Mars To Sirius Songs Ranked

From Mars to Sirius is the third studio album by the French progressive metal–technical death metal band Gojira. The album was largely written by Joe and Mario Duplantier, but Christian Andreu contributed certain parts such as the outro of “Where Dragons Dwell” and the central melody on “World to Come”. According to Mario, the album was entirely self-produced by the band. Jean-Michel Labadie was involved in the production, especially on the coherence of his bass in the compositions, and with his work the band sought “to bring a much warmer note into their sound”. Gojira had emphasized more interludes and melodies in this album. Joe Duplantier said that From Mars to Sirius represented a journey; saying, “and as in every journey, there are air gaps, variations and moments of calm”. After the recording of Terra Incognita made in ten days in a studio in Brussels, the band decided to build their own studio called, Le Studio des Milans, located in their hometown, where From Mars to Sirius would be recorded. The drum recording were made at Le Florida in Agen. Prior to the album’s release date, the band performed two songs at concerts in France, “Backbone” and “The Heaviest Matter of the Universe”. Here are all of From Mars To Sirius songs ranked.

12. Unicorn

“The following cut “Unicorn” is a rather nice, serene and melodic 2 minute plus instrumental track that takes a brief intermission from the savagely severe brutality with it’s dreamy acoustic guitars and beautifully serene atmosphere.”

11. From Mars

“From Mars” which is a brief 2 minute plus prog piece that feels and sounds very Pink Floyd-ish thus offering a short breath just before the crushing stompfest that is “To Sirius” This album is a musical journey that is practically unparalleled. Every song is great and it was hard to determine my favorite songs.”

10. World to Come

“We have “World to Come” which oddly enough to me really reminds me a lot of early Alice in Chains because of it’s cleanly sung vocals during the verses, and mesmerizingly slowed down riffs and bluesy leads, and is also later highlighted by more heavily grinding, lumbering riffs, smashing drum beats, and more powerful harsh vocals as the song later progresses on.”

9. To Sirius

“To Sirius” which borderlines on a heavily melee of colossal grooves, blistering, jack-hammering double bass drum patterns from Mario, plus some cranium cracking blast beats being thrown in especially around 2:20, plus more walls of massive, chunky, grinding, lumbering riffing, and more of Joe’s powerful, emotionally filled screams and howls and some sick, beastly death growls especially around 2:35 as well.””

8. In the Wilderness

“In the Wilderness” meanwhile, is yet another savagely crushing death fest highlighted by yet more heavily blistering, crunching, chugging, head-slamming riffing and punishing double bass drum assaults, and monstrous, deathly growls and screams and awesomely creative environmental themed lyrics throughout to boot. Here are some lyrics for example:”

7. Where Dragons Dwell

“However, the brutality does pick right back up with the menacingly crushing and slow paced Morbid Angel influenced “Where Dragons Dwell” which is highlighted by a massively crushing, grinding, and lumbering main riff along with some wickedly sounding pinch harmonics, as well as some savagely blistering, and searing double bass driven verses, and monstrous vocals from Joe and brilliant mythological themed lyrics to boot.”

6. Global Warming

“Then finally, the album closes things off with an awesomely epic closer in “Global Warming” which boasts a very deliciously addicting tapping guitar harmony riff, along with more of the band’s trademark juggernaut of heavy, crushing, and lumbering riffage, plus awesome drumming from Mario, and a great blend of harsh and clean vocals from Joe as well, and I also love the melodic sung refrain part in which Joe repeatedly sings “We will see our children growing” over and over until the song finally ends on a gentle note.”

5. From the Sky

“From the Sky” is another behemoth of a track that boasts an onslaught of menacingly grooving death metal complete with busy waves of machine gun-like double bass drums, and thunderously heavy, crushing, chugging riffs and seething tremolo picking leads throughout, and merciless throat ripping yells and growls from Joe as well, and there’s also a really cool melodic section around the 3:50 mark which includes some awesome bass parts from Jean-Michel before the heaviness kicks right back in for the remainder of the song. “

4. Ocean Planet

“The album opens things up with “Ocean Planet”, and what an absolute mammoth of an opening song this truly is. This song is definitely one of the best and heaviest opening songs that I’ve ever listened to on any metal album, and it’s also my absolute favorite song on the album here. This song just pounds the listener’s ears with a crushingly huge and heavy groove along with a monstrous onslaught of massively thunderous, bone crushing, head slamming riffs and massive pinch harmonics so heavy they could even summon the mighty Godzilla himself, along with heavily pummeling jack-hammer like drums, and almost melodic-like screaming vocals from Joe. Words just can’t even describe how much I love this song. It is truly a monstrously epic tune indeed.”

3. Backbone

“Backbone” is an another savagely intense number that is highlighted by unrelenting, brain-hammering riffage and ferociously slaughtering blast beats and double bass kicks that never lose any steam whatsoever”

2. The Heaviest Matter of the Universe

“The Heaviest Matter of the Universe” (another one of my favorites here) which just rapidly explodes with a punishing assault of mercilessly pummeling machine gun double bass drums, and relentlessly blistering, crunching, pulverizing riffage, and ferocious vocal deliveries throughout, and the song also features some really cool melodic sung vocals from Joe around the 2:51 mark as well.”

1. Flying Whales

“Flying Whales” which is also another one of my favorite songs that features some whale song samples and melancholic clean guitars in the beginning along with some nice bass lines and gentle drums that slowly propel into yet another crushingly heavy stompfest filled with monstrous, crushing, pounding riffs, heavy, stomping drum beats and clobbering double bass flurries, and ruthless screams and growls”
