Hat Trick Songs Ranked

Hat Trick is the third studio album by the American folk rock trio America, released on Warner Bros. Records in 1973. It peaked at number 28 on the Billboard album chart; it failed to go gold, whereas the group’s first two releases had platinum sales. The album produced the single, “Muskrat Love”, which reached number 67 on the Billboard singles chart and number 11 on the adult contemporary chart. That song would become a much bigger hit for Captain & Tennille three years later. America employed string arrangements for the first time on an album, with the assistance of Jim Ed Norman. Here are all of Hat Trick songs ranked.

11. It’s Life

“Not much to add to what has already been said. It’s just quite amazing that they self-produced this gem. There is some delicious production here. Perhaps they didn’t need George Martin to come in at all the following year.”

10. Goodbye

“It saddens me that this effort has not had the commercial success it deserved. There’s not a bad tune on this record (just as their two previous albums). Later on, like during the declining years from 1976 and on their was quite a bit more “filler” material.”

9. Submarine Ladies

“Within a pop spectrum there is a little bit of everything on this album, including melancholy love songs, a bit of progressive rock, and the expected ballads. I bought this album for our anniversary and my wife and I both enjoyed it immensely. Definitely the best album of the band’s first three.”

8. Willow Tree Lullaby

“The soulful, spiritual quality of this album is unsurpassed. Every song is a gem. I bought this as an LP when it was first released in the ’70’s, and it continues to be one of my all-time favorites.”

7. Rainbow Song

“You know those records that you heard when you were too young to place who the band was, but you remember the songs fondly and once you hear them again there’s a memory shockwave that hits you? For some of us, Hat Trick was one of those.”

6. Green Monkey

“The album comes off a bit more polished than America’s previous two efforts, and as their third album it is evident they started to hit a stride. The original three are all here on this one, no breakup had occurred yet.”

5. She’s Gonna Let You Down

“Most personal America-Album, unmatched post-hippie-mysticism, natural atmosphere, real played music, one of the reverence album of the seventies, overused word gem fits here. This music’s got soul.”

4. Molten Love

“This is a greatly under rated song.. It’s cute and sentimental and Gary, Dan and Dewey harmonize so beautifully that its just breath taking. Really listen to this song and tell me its not a great one.”

3. Wind Wave

“HAT TRICK has been favorite of mine from way back, since I bought it as a middle school kid when it came out. America, the second band I had seen in concert (with Silver opening for them, with Brent Midland on Hammond!) and I feel they were still on a creative ascent, producing cooler and cooler records every time out. “

2. Muskrat Love

“Do not be too judgemental about “Muskrat Love” – just because C&T made it a mega-hit later on. Listen to it again with an open mind. It’s a lovely arrangement too. I’m curious about its inclusion though. Did Warner’s need to promote a potential radio hit? It’s the only song not written by the boys, but they do make it ‘theirs’ (not unlike “Head and Heart” from the previous album).”

1. Hat Trick

“The magic of the group is and has been the unique blend of acoustic guitar and vocal harmony underpinnings found in their best stuff. America has recorded a few excellent harder edged tunes, but their surreal and spiritually funky ballads, use of drone, understated piano and consistently great bass playing have always been my reasons while listening to the confluence of Beckley/Peek/Bunnell that makes even their sappy lyrics easier to endure.”
