Like a Rock Songs Ranked

Like a Rock is the thirteenth studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Seger, released in 1986. The title track is best known for being featured in Chevrolet truck commercials throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. “Fortunate Son” is a live cover of the 1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival hit, recorded March 31, 1983 at Cobo Hall in Detroit. It was originally available only as the B-side of the “American Storm” single, and was added as a bonus track to the CD release of the album. The vinyl version ends with “Somewhere Tonight”. The song “Miami” is featured in an episode of the TV series Miami Vice. This is the first studio album credited to “Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band” that doesn’t feature the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section replacing the Silver Bullet Band on any tracks. 9. Tightrope

“I can’t see why I should hate the 80s, especially songs like “Tightrope” show me that they were a better decade than reported. It’s sounding raw and full of energy in spite of the polished sound. It’s got genuine emotion inside.”

8. American Storm

“American Storm,” with its driving beat, is one of those rock anthems that he was so good at creating. I have. And I have ears to listen, so “American Storm” didn’t escape me as a very carefully written, fine Rock-song.”

7. Somewhere Tonight

“Many people condemn this album as being Seger’s attempt to reinvent himself as an ’80s rocker. It’s true that the omnipresent synthesizers sound a little dated today, but if you’re willing to overlook them, you’ll discover a treasure trove of music that got surprisingly little recognition for its inventiveness and power.”

6. It’s You

“Bob Seger may have become a tad complacent or maybe just too secure. The music marked a slight turn from the blue collar rock upon which his reputation had been built. The increased keyboards and synthesizer sound on some of the tracks was his adjusting to the music of the eighties.”

5. Miami

“Miami” is something of a departure for Seger, a smooth, almost soft-rock song that casually tells a compelling tale–a notable foreshadowing of the style he would explore in depth with his album “The Fire Inside.”

4. Sometimes

“Bob Seger is one of those bands that makes good rock and roll what it is. He is truly origanal and easily one of the best. Like a Rock is far from his best album, but it is still great.”

3. The Ring

“Definitely not as evenly strong as his earlier albums. It’s too mawkish, flat and corny for its own good, but the finer songs here (like The Ring) are still poignant examples of Seger’s masterful songwriting, and his raspy voice sounds typically endearing.”

2. The Aftermath

“I think people are being a little harsh with this album, I think Bob does well to keep his credibility while exploring a slightly more modern sound.”

1. Like a Rock

“The title track” Like a Rock, stands like a rock, and is one of Seger’s finest songs, forget about the Truck Commercials. “Like a Rock” sounds the most like the “original” Bob Seger, and would easily be the best song on the album if we hadn’t all heard the chorus so darn much (and I agree… someone at Chevy should be fired for that).”
