Man Against Machine Songs Ranked

Man Against Machine is the eleventh studio album by American country music artist Garth Brooks. It was released on November 11, 2014 by RCA Records Nashville and Pearl Records. Brooks confirmed the album in July 2014 while announcing his comeback world tour. Brooks’ first new studio album since Scarecrow, which was released in 2001, it was his first album released digitally, exclusively to his online music store, GhostTunes. The album’s lead single, “People Loving People”, was released on September 3, 2014. Prior to the album’s release, Brooks told CMT that regardless of the album’s chart performance, he does not plan on following the charts, believing that “quality music will show success over time, regardless of initial sales numbers.” As of 2016, the album sold less than Brooks’ previous efforts, having received considerably less support from the radio but has gained generally favorable reviews. Brooks’ decision to not release the album via iTunes contributed to its poor digital sales. Here are all of Man Against Machine songs ranked.

14. Tacoma

“Another classical theme of trying to get rid of the memory of an old flame. Sort of a repeat of the theme of “Midnight Train”. I don’t like it as well as “Midnight Train”, but it is decent.”

13. Fish

“This song is about meeting a young fisherman and trying to give him advice about how to make a fortune. When told that once he has earned his fortune, he will be able to do anything he wants, the fisherman responds by asking “Like fish?”. This causes the singer to reconsider his priorities in life, and whether working long hours for money and posessions is worth it. I really like this song.”

12. People Loving People

“A song about how everyone needs to get together and love each other. Sort of a 60’s theme with a country sound. I like the idea, and it is done ok, but it is a bit trite and there’s not a lot of substance.”

11. Midnight Train

“This is my favorite song of the album. A song with the classical country theme of trying to get rid of the memory of an ex girlfriend. “Whiskey bottle on the floor. King James Bible from the drawer. Neither won, but Lord they’ve done their best….” The song is well produced, and you can almost imagine the train the singer is talking about based on the way the rhythm is done.”

10. Wrong About You

“A fairly clever song by someone acknowledging that the girl he broke up with was right about many of the things she said, so he starts to think he was wrong about her.”

9. All-American Kid

“A top high school boy chooses service to his country and is publicly recognized for doing so. The theme is not my cup of tea, but it is decently done and sounds ok.”

8. She’s Tired of Boys

“I didn’t care much for this one. The singer meets a young lady half his age who is tired of the immaturity of young men her age, so she goes for the singer. Too obvious and direct and sounds too much like wishful thinking to me.”

7. You Wreck Me

” Fairly creative song about a girl who takes advantage of a guy but he doesn’t mind. Garth Brooks is an extremely talented artist, writer, songwriter, and I guess the best term would be “entertainer”.”

6. Send ‘Em on Down the Road

“So the song “Mom” was about mothers, this one is about fathers and raising kids – specifically, how much to guide them and how much to let them strike out on their own. Pretty well done.”

5. Cowboys Forever

“Sounds like an obligatory song about cowboys. Nothing special to me. Garth outdid himself! A modern masterpiece from the master of modern country music.. New music never sounded so familiar yet so fresh at the same time..”

4. Rodeo and Juliet

“Mixes country sound with lyrics from Shakespeare. A bit corney but pretty well done. I thought this album was refreshing in todays hiphop, crossover music ‘country’ radio play.”

3. Mom

“A real tear jerker with a country sound. A soon-to-be-born baby is talking to God about being scared to begin life on earth. God describes to him the mom he will meet there, who will ultimately put him back on the path back to God.”

2. Cold Like That

“The singer laments always having to follow his conscience, wishing he could could take a break and do just what he wants for once. Pretty well done, and sounds pretty well like country music.”

1. Man Against Machine

“This is the title track. I like it. But it is certainly not a country sound. It reminds me a lot of screeming 70s rock and roll. The singer is lamenting the “machines”, which I guess are the equivalent of “The Man” in 70s rock and roll. Pretty cleverly done, and catchy – but like I said, it is not a “country” sound, which is surprising given that it is the title track of the album.”
