Sorry Darling find strength in melancholy on ‘Like You’
Brooklyn alt-rock quartet Sorry Darling dial back some of their usual intensity on new single ‘Like You’, released as the latest preview of forthcoming EP Mirrors.
Sitting on the more melodic side of the band’s guitar-driven sound, ‘Like You’ pairs melancholic songwriting with an underlying rock ’n’ roll pulse. Liz Wagner Biro’s smoky lead vocal gives the track an added sense of unease, while the band’s power-pop instincts keep its heavier emotional themes from overwhelming the melody.
The song examines how a relationship can gradually undermine someone’s confidence and sense of identity. That idea carries into the accompanying video, which follows a pageant queen finishing second and subsequently questioning the life she has constructed around other people’s expectations. As the band explain, its eventual message is that “the real winning is choosing yourself.”
‘Like You’ is the second track taken from Mirrors, arriving October 6. Recorded with producer Mike Dwyer at The Bunker in Cairo, New York, the EP explores projection, relationships and the complicated process of seeing both yourself and another person clearly.
