Sugarland Songs Ranked

Sugarland is an American country music duo founded in Atlanta, Georgia. The duo consists of singer-songwriters Jennifer Nettles (lead vocals) and Kristian Bush (vocals, guitar, mandolin). They were founded in 2002, at which point Kristen Hall (vocals, guitar) was also a member. All three had experience in folk rock: Nettles had recorded in the groups Soul Miner’s Daughter and Jennifer Nettles Band, Bush had recorded two albums as one-half of the duo Billy Pilgrim, and Hall had recorded two solo albums. After Hall left in 2006, Nettles and Bush continued as a duo. Signed to Mercury Nashville Records in 2004, Sugarland recorded four studio albums, one Christmas album, and one live album for that label between then and 2010. The duo went on hiatus in 2012, during which time both Nettles and Bush recorded solo albums. They reunited officially in 2017 for Bigger, a studio album issued on Big Machine Records. Here are all of Sugarland songs ranked.

10. Stand Back Up (Twice the Speed of Life, 2004)

“Basically I feel this song is about a relationship with God. He will never put you through more than you can handle, even though it might hurt or be difficult, there is always a reason for what happens in your life. The line when she says when the darkness tries to get me, there is a light that just won’t let me – this speaks to temptations of evil and overcoming then through your faith in the Lord.”

9. Already Gone (Love on the Inside, 2008)

“Another one of my very favorite Sugarland songs and singles. Nice folky undertones on this ramblin’ man/woman anthem and also it features one of Kristian Bush’s most useful vocal contributions in the great climax – it’s one of the rare points your hear them as an actual duet. Outstanding, compelling song and deservingly another #1.”

8. Tonight (The Incredible Machine, 2010)

“The song’s title is as original as the lyrics, still it’s one of the four still listenable songs from the ‘Incredable Machine’ disaster that their last albums was. Not bad for a U2 song maybe, yeah probably the song the shows the strongest these influences (and there are several songs with that sound on the Country charts lately).”

7. Stuck Like Glue (The Incredible Machine, 2010)

“This is a great example of a song that should not work, yet somehow becomes so addictive that it’s impossible to deny. I mean, the fucking reggae break in the middle for christ’s sake…that sort of thing should not happen in a really bare bones country song even before Jennifer Nettles adopts a faux-Jamaican accent. And yet instead of thinking that it’s a travesty it winds up being moderately endearing. “

6. Baby Girl (Premium Quality Tunes, 2003)

“More or less another song about ‘chasing that neon rainbow’ and trying to get a break making music. Ironically it was Sugarland’s debut single and went all the way to #2, while by now it should be clear that their dream has indeed come true. Well done, guy and girls. Narrative with the letter-writing might be a bit cheesy, but I still enjoy the chorus very much as I do Jennifers voice..”

5. Little Miss (The Incredible Machine, 2010)

“One of the more listeneable Sugarland songs of their latest otherwise hard-to-take album (along with the previous hit “Stuck Like Glue” and maybe “Tonight”) so it’s no surprise this should be the second single of it and it’s a little female empowerment song of sorts and consists of one liners and a rather boring ‘it’s alright and it’ll be alright again’ chorus, the lyrics are far too facebook-stats-y to be really thought-provoking. And musically this is far from being as exciting as their best stuff..”

4. Everyday America (Enjoy the Ride, 2006)

“The best thing about Sugarland is that they can take you on a great big emotional roller coaster. One song can make you feel good and happy, like this one, or make you feel the pain and heartbreak of “Stay”. One of the top Country Bands out there.”

3. Run (Modern Love, 2011)

“Jennifer has sung with just about everybody in show business from every genre. Her voice adapts to just about everyone, and her vocals are crystal clear. She knows how to use her voice and she has got to have studied to use it so perfectly. I never get tired of her.”

2. Stay (Enjoy the Ride, 2006)

“For many this is Sugarland’s masterpiece as of now and it’s easy to understand why, since not many recent Country songs are as direct as this one in its approach. Great expressive singing in bare, acoustic instrumentation – no wonder it hits right home as pro-cheating songs are kind of rare these days. Thumbs up for making this risky song a single, glad it paid off and brought new respect for them.”

1. It Happens (Love on the Inside, 2008)

“Yes, it kinda fits in the same mold as “Something More” and “Settlin'” as a being-sick-of-the-9-5-life-anthem and might be the least best of those, but it has a charming, if slightly corny hook that then gets close in spirit to Blake Shelton’s “Some Beach” if even a step further (wonder when the first actual “curse” will make it to the charts).. well well in spite of the many references it has a catchy and irresistible enough hook to stand on its own feet.”
