Take off your Pants and Jacket Songs Ranked

Take Off Your Pants and Jacket is the fourth studio album by American rock band Blink-182, released on June 12, 2001, by MCA Records. The band had spent much of the previous year traveling and supporting their previous album Enema of the State (1999), which launched their mainstream career. The album’s title is a tongue-in-cheek pun on male masturbation (“take off your pants and jack it”), and its cover art has icons for each member of the trio: an airplane (“take off”), a pair of pants, and a jacket. It is the band’s final release through MCA. The album was recorded over three months at Signature Sound in San Diego with producer Jerry Finn. During the sessions, MCA executives pressured the band to retain the sound that helped their previous album sell millions. As such, Take Off Your Pants and Jacket continues the pop-punk tone that Blink-182 had honed and made famous, albeit with a heavier post-hardcore sound inspired by bands such as Fugazi and Refused. Here are all of Take off your Pants and Jacket songs ranked.

13. Happy Holidays, You Bastard

“EASILY the best joke song blink’s ever done. Filled with hilarious lyrics, INSANE drum chops courtesy of Travis… and have you heard it live? Damn!  This is the album that got me into music. It shaped me into the man I am today. One of my personal favorites of all time.”

12. Roller Coaster

“This is Mark’s anthem for TOYPAJ. It’s about his marriage to Skye Everly and how he’s afraid his happiness will fade in time. Great poppish song, and perfect radio material. From this point forward in the album, I really could care less. The first seven songs are enough for me, but Roller coaster is a great song indeed.”

11. Shut Up

“‘Shut Up’ is an angry out-of-love letter spelling out the diseased and bitter emotions behind a messy break-up. Shut Up,this is a good song alittle on the profane side but good none the less.”

10. Please Take Me Home

“The final track of TOYPAJ – and what a way to end an album! This was the first song off of TOYPAJ that I ever heard, way back in December ’00 when they premiered it live at the San Diego New Year’s Eve Party. I loved it then, and I freakin’ LOVE it now. It’s definitely got that “popular single” vibe.”

9. Give Me One Good Reason

“Give Me One Good Reason is lyrically, the best song on the album, as it deals with the ever growing issue among peers, poseurs. Give Me One Good Reason’ is the new teeny-bopper anthem of the month, laying the smack down on conformity.”

8. Online Songs

“This song is freakin’ sweet… a punk rock song with great lyrics! The main riff is EXTREMELY reminiscent of Dude Ranch’s “Boring” – but that’s a very good thing! It’s very cool, fast, and sounds great. One of the best songs.”

7. Every Time I Look for You

“A cool fast song with great vocal interplay between Mark and Tom. Nice lyrics too. This song is also on the “American Pie 2″ soundtrack. The stripped processing in this song is also quite noticeable – you can actually hear them breathing, and the sound of their picks hitting the strings.”

6. Reckless Abandon

“This song is basically verbal episode of jack-a**. Tom just talks about a bunch of stunts and stuff people wouldn’t do on a daily basis. The chorus may make it seem like a mature song, but the lyrics to the verses aren’t really mature at all.”

5. Story of a Lonely Guy

“A slower, rock-ish song… but it’s awesome! The lyrics are the strongest point – it deals with your typical loser of a guy who has no luck with girls. The dude actually sounds suicidal in some parts, and it’s really touching. This song is quite similar to “Adam’s Song” in a way.”

4. Anthem Part Two

“What an amazing song to start off an album. I had EXTREMELY high expectations for this song – “Anthem” was EASILY the best song off of Enema Of The State, and one of their best songs ever. So when I listened to this, I was blown away. It’s a typical pop-punk track, but it’s filled with Tom’s powerful vocals, crashing, raunchy guitar riffs, and some AWESOME lyrics”

3. The Rock Show

“‘The Rock Show’ may be a loud, clean-sounding song, with a chorus suited for chanting by crowds of teens; but it’s fun to be the one who sits back and knows, from having read the lyrics, that it’s about a kid who’s not the sharpest sword in the armory”

2. First Date

“First Date is a song that many people can relate to. It deals with a relationship but like the title says, its the first date, and Blink shines in full force on this song with excellent lyrics and music.”

1. Stay Together for the Kids

“Stay Together For the Kids, which is pretty much the Adam’s Song of the album. It is a ballad about the divorce of Tom’s parents and what it’s like to live through it. Being a ballad, it is very low key in the beginning, but watch out, because the chorus is extremely heavy and will take you by surprise.”
